I am following advice, working from home and doing my best to respond to the high volume of e-mails being received from constituents and businesses in North Wales regarding the Coronavirus (COVID-19).
I Chaired a Cross Party Group on Funerals and Bereavement conference call to discuss the pandemic. The top issue raised was the need for Funeral Directors and their staff to have Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). I subsequently wrote to the UK Health Secretary regarding this and asked my colleague Angela Burns AM, Shadow Health Minister, to raise it with the Welsh Health Minister.
Having been made aware of the ‘Get coronavirus support as an extremely vulnerable person’ register for England, I submitted a Written Question to the Welsh Government calling for an equivalent register for Wales.
I was pleased to promote on my social media the nationwide applause for our NHS staff. They are doing valiant work in these extraordinarily challenging times. I commend and thank them all, along with all other key workers and volunteers.
As Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Communities and Local Government, I issued a Statement praising the work of Local Authorities across Wales, who are working around the clock to ensure the availability of the services people need amid this pandemic, whilst minimising the spread of the virus.
Wherever possible, Councils will be looking to help residents with council tax payments on a case by case basis, and the Welsh Government must therefore ensure that the council tax support scheme enables Councils to provide even more provision if necessary.
I am backing calls on the Welsh Government for an emergency ‘Stabilisation Fund’ for the voluntary services and charities supporting vulnerable people in Wales and taking direct action to tackle the impact of the Coronavirus on them. Urgency is now being expressed by essential third sector service providers, who tell me that without additional funding they will be forced to reduce support for vulnerable people by cutting back on their core services, such as helplines and online support groups, which will, in turn, add massively to the numbers in crisis putting pressure on NHS and Social Care services.
Sadly, unscrupulous criminals have been exploiting fears about Covid-19 to prey on members of the public, particularly older and vulnerable people, and I therefore urge everyone to be extra vigilant.
It is vital that in coming weeks we continue to pull together and support one another as this challenge continues.
