Commenting on the conditions being demanded of Greece in exchange for a new EU backed bailout, Guto said, “We’ve just had an election about austerity and the people of this country were able to make a decision as to whether they were in favour or against living within our means... Now, in Greece, a majority of people have voted for a rejection of austerity which is the wrong call perhaps but it’s their democratic entitlement.
But because they are part of the single currency they are being ignored. And that is the whole point about the single currency: You cannot have a single currency without having a single state.”
Warning on the risks for Wales, Guto continued, “There is no denying that if your largest trading partner is the eurozone group then it will have an effect. [We] are cushioned to an extent from the worst of the crisis but we are undoubtedly going to be affected.”
